Movement Improvisation

Life comes to us through the senses and is translated into bodily sensations and movement responses — some expressed, some not. In this class we'll experience letting our bodily sensations take us into a small dance that expresses something of our story, whether directly or symbolically. We'll use each other as witnesses and thereby give these parts a real existence in the world. Some call this art.
As cultural beings we don't express large parts of our experience and the responses created in our body when meeting life. This creates an accumulation of movements that have essentially never been performed and are waiting their turn.
Dance has always served in tribal cultures as a tool for integrating the everyday experiences of its members. Birth, death, hunting, war — all received expression in dances and theater, so that the community's souls could process what they go through in their lives.
As a person, I find that the ability to improvise in movement allows me to express, release, and internalize different parts of myself that don't come to expression in daily life, and in doing so redeem them from their confinement and bring them back into my world. As a dancer and creator I use improvisation to express through my body what my imagination seeks to bring into reality. Through improvisation I also refine my body and its abilities to enjoy it more in daily life, both as a performing dancer and as a contact dancer.

"The dancer creates worlds for himself and for his audience. He is the shaman who summons the rain and banishes demons. He is the psychologist who holds a mirror before his audience so they can understand their actions and their lives. He is the researcher who observes life and then brings it to the stage to tell others what he discovered. In doing so he serves society." – Ido Tzadok
"Dance Dance, otherwise we are lost" – Pina Bausch
