Lyrical Jazz

Lyrical jazz sits between neo-classical ballet and modern dance. The lyrical style places emphasis on the words, so the dance clings to the lyrics of the song and tells a story.
Lyrical jazz is expressive dance with emphasized movements fluidly connected one to the next. The movement is gentle yet very dynamic. Lyrical jazz focuses on conveying musical rhythm and emotion through movement.
A lyrical jazz class consists of 50 minutes of warm-up and 40 minutes of a combination that changes every two or three classes.
We begin with warming up the body and increasing the pace, toning and strengthening, then move through technique and finish with stretching and flexibility exercises.
The combination tells a story and each person has their own way of expressing themselves through the dance, with plenty of room for emotion, and of course without compromising on the physical and technical elements!
√ A class for all levels.
√ An emotional class :)
Frequently Asked Questions
Is lyrical jazz suitable for beginners?
Yes, it's a class for all levels. We start with a warm-up, move on to technique and body conditioning, and build the combination gradually, so there's time to learn and get into it.
What's the difference between lyrical jazz and modern jazz, and what music is used?
Lyrical jazz emphasizes the words and the story in the song, and the movement follows the lyrics and the emotion within them. It's softer and more flowing, and is usually danced to melodic, emotional songs with lyrics (ballads, pop). Modern jazz focuses more on rhythm, energy, and technique.
Do I need a ballet background for lyrical jazz?
Prior background helps but isn't required. The class suits all levels and everything is learned gradually from the start, so you can come with no experience.
What does a lyrical jazz class look like?
The class consists of about 50 minutes of warm-up and about 40 minutes working on a combination that changes every two or three classes. The combination tells a story, with plenty of room for emotion and personal expression, without compromising on technique.
What should I wear to a lyrical jazz class, and do you dance barefoot?
Come in comfortable clothing that allows free movement. You dance barefoot or in socks. Bring a water bottle.
