About BODY LAB

BODY LAB grew out of Pilates and years of teaching, practice and exploration of the body. It takes a further step towards the source: the body behind the method. Human nature.

Over four days, we will explore breathing, the upper body, the core and the lower body, investigating the principles, connections and possibilities within bodyweight practice.

We will revisit familiar Pilates mat exercises while looking beyond the repertoire to anatomy, free movement, sensation and the awareness within every moving part.

We will encounter a body that is more than a collection of muscles, bones and joints, and more than a machine to operate correctly. There is nothing to strengthen, nothing truly to hold. The invitation is to make the hidden visible.

Across these four days, we will learn to see the body as a system of expression. It carries and expresses the person who inhabits it: habits, choices, relationships, patterns of organisation and accumulated loads.

Movement is not the expression itself; it is one way to see and read it.

At the centre of this perspective is fascia, the body's continuous system of connective tissues. By understanding fascial pathways and practising the intelligent movement within them, we will explore how to work with the organisation each pathway offers, nurture the internal organs at the heart of our being, and discover new possibilities for resonance, release from compression, connection and presence.

Before Pilates, before yoga and before any movement method, there is a body. The better we understand it, the better we practise and teach.

Workshop programme

Thursday, November 5 - Breathing

How does breathing change the way we move? How does it relate to the body's organisation for posture, healing and rehabilitation, energy, mood and even personality?

We will explore the respiratory system through anatomy and understanding, experience it in the body, and connect breathing with movement. Every movement has its own breath, like a personal signature.

Friday, November 6 - Upper body

Does the movement of the hand really begin at the shoulder? What happens when we see the upper body as one system, from the diaphragm through the spine, collarbones, sternum and shoulders to the hands?

We will follow the fascial connections between the thoracic spine, neck and arms, moving from structural understanding to exploration and rehabilitative application through movement.

Saturday, November 7 - Core

What if the core's role is to enable movement rather than hold the body? What allows it to maintain internal space, transfer forces and keep moving without compressing into itself?

We will reconsider the core as a dynamic system encompassing the entire trunk, constantly changing volume, shape and pressure, and explore the relationships between breathing, pressure, support and movement.

Sunday, November 8 - Lower body

How does the lower body work as one system, from the pelvis to its contact with the ground? How do the structures of the pelvis and hip, knees and feet connect?

From the lower back and pelvis through the thighs and knees to the feet and their contact with the ground, we will explore how these structures are interwoven and discover the importance of lower-body movement based on rotation, spirals and figure-eight patterns.
